Meet the Challenge in Pai Gow Poker
Here is another game where gamers have to be creative and make unusual decisions. You get 7 cards. From these 7 cards, you make a five-card hand and a two-card hand. The larger hand has to be stronger than the smaller hand.
The challenge has to do with trying to win both hands. It would be easy to have a powerful five-card hand and a weak two-card hand but gamers need to win both hands in order to win their bet.
So, gamers will often break a strong hand in order to have two less strong hands that can both win!
This line of reasoning reminds us of what happens often in video poker where the best strategy may be to break a winning high pair in order to go for a much better hand such as a straight flush or a Royal Flush.
Caribbean Poker Elicits Warm Sensations Even in the Winter

There are three Caribbean Poker variations and we carry all of them! They are Caribbean Stud, Caribbean Draw, and Caribbean Holdem. The idea in Caribbean Poker is to have a better hand than the dealer and also for the dealer to “qualify”! In each Caribbean Poker variation, the dealer has to have a minimum hand that is different for each variation in order to qualify.
Here are the minimum hands the dealer needs to qualify:
- Caribbean Stud: Ace-king
- Caribbean Draw: A pair of eights
- Caribbean Holdem: A pair of fours
In Caribbean Draw, the player and the dealer can draw up to two cards and discard up to two cards. The dealer decides what to do based on a strict set of dealer’s rules.
In Caribbean Holdem, there are community cards.
Caribbean Stud Poker Game Play
The player antes. Then the dealer deals the cards and the player sees one of the dealer’s cards. The player has to then decide to call or fold. If he folds, he gives up his ante bet. If she calls, she adds another bet that is twice the ante bet.
At this stage there are three possible outcomes:
- The dealer does not qualify. The player wins the ante bet and is paid 1-1. The call bet is a push.
- The dealer qualifies. The dealer’s hand is better than the player’s hand and the house wins both bets.
- The dealer qualifies and the player’s hand is better. The player wins both bets. If the player has two pair or better, he gets a better payout up to 100-1 for a Royal Flush.
Caribbean Draw and Holdem Game Play
The betting in these Caribbean Poker variations is the same as in Caribbean Stud. The payout scale is slightly different but the better the player’s hand is, the higher the payout will be.
Strategy in Caribbean Poker
The key is that the dealer has to qualify for the player to win the call bet. That means that in almost all hands, the best strategy is to call! The player wins the ante bet if he or she has called and the dealer doesn’t qualify!
It is also an amazing aspect of Caribbean Poker, that even if the player’s hand is lower than the dealer’s qualifying hand, he or she will still win the ante bet if the dealer does not qualify and the player has called! This rule also applies when the dealer does not qualify and the player’s and is weaker than the dealer’s hand!
