The celebration began in 1810 when the Crown Prince of Bavaria, later to become King Ludwig I to Princess Therese von Saxony-Hildburghausen.

The Crown Prince rose to that title when his father assumed the title of King of Bavaria. He was the godson of Louis XVI of France.
The royal families of Europe inter-married as a way of forming alliances. The King of Bavaria supported Napoleon and the Crown Prince had to accede to his father’s geo-political maneuverings even as he disagreed strongly on an alliance with Napoleon.
Other than the fact that European royalty at the time was entangled in all manner of intrigue, there was nothing in either the Prince or the Princess to warrant an annual celebration that would attract millions of people to Bavaria every year!
A Horse Race on a Field that Later Was Named after the Princess
A member of the Bavarian National Guard had the idea of celebrating the wedding with a horse race! He floated the idea past the King who endorsed it enthusiastically.
No one foresaw that the horse race would trigger a massive annual celebration!
We Want More!
The next year, the locals of Bavaria and especially of Munich declared that the memory of the celebration of the previous year was still indelibly etched in their minds and that demanded another “party”.
The modern beer tents and music were not yet an intrinsic part of Oktoberfest but in only a few years tents went up and people flocked to Munich and the Bavarian countryside to celebrate with good beer and demonstrative music!
How Did the Word Get out to the World to Celebrate Oktoberfest?
Well, there was no social media at the time!
The word got out as Bavarians and Germans in general joined the great migrations of the 19th century and brought with them the memories of Oktoberfest.

The next three, per Wikipedia, are Blumenau, Brazil, Cincinnati, Ohio, and Denver, Colorado!
Clearly, Oktober as a late summer and early fall celebration has wide appeal.
Places where one might not expect Oktoberfest to be celebrated are Sri Lanka, India, China, and, remarkably, the town of Taybeh in Palestine! After all, Palestine is vast majority Muslim and beer (all alcoholic beverages) is not allowed in Islam!
Wikipedia lists no fewer than 84 places in the United States where Oktoberfest is celebrated!
Why is German Beer Special?
First of all is the quality of the ingredients. As with any food or drink, if the ingredients going in are less than excellent, the end product will be less than excellent.
