Online blackjack games are some of the most popular games at Everygame Casino and at most online casinos.  Online casinos are able to offer many variations of blackjack.  Land-based casinos cannot match the variety of blackjack options for players since blackjack tables take up so much floor space and these casinos need all the floor space they can use for games that generate the most revenue, mainly slots.

Let’s look at some of the blackjack options we offer gamers here at Everygame Casino.

First, What is Blackjack?

Blackjack, in almost every variation, is a game where the player tries to reach 21 points or as close to that point count as possible.  If the player busts, or goes over 21 points, he or she loses automatically.

Blackjack is a game of strategy as well as of chance since players can make correct decisions on almost every hand to increase the player’s chances of winning.

What Decisions Can a Player Make?

Here is a list of the decisions blackjack players can make:

  1. Hit means to take another card.
  2. Stand means to take no more cards.
  3. Double down means to double one’s bet and get one more card only.
  4. Split refers to pairs.  The player adds another bet equal to the ante and now plays two hands.
  5. Surrender means to give up the hand and lose half the ante.
  6. Insurance means to make another, protective, bet if the dealer shows an ace.

That’s it!  It might seem simple and straightforward but blackjack strategy is quite complex at times.  It has taken analysis of millions of hands to arrive at a statistically correct way to continue any hand.

On to the Blackjack Variations

We will start with 21 Blackjack which is the standard variation of blackjack as it was played in France when the game was created.  Players should immerse themselves in the strategy for 21 Blackjack.

We have a few pointers and tips:

  1. Maintain a sound monetary budget.  This keeps you in control.
  2. Learn the nuances of standard blackjack strategy.  With correct play on every hand, the return to player rate is about 99.5%.
  3. Never play 6-5 blackjack.  We always pay 3-2 for a blackjack.  6-5 blackjack gives the house a much bigger advantage.
  4. Set a reasonable time budget.  Everygame Casino is always “open” so there is no reason to play on and on.
  5. Never take insurance.

European Blackjack

This version is very similar to the kind of blackjack played in the United States.  There are, however, three differences, one of which is significant.

  1. The dealer deals his or her hole card after the player has made his or her first strategy decision.  This has no real effect on the outcome of the hand.
  2. Players can double down only with 9, 10, or 11 points.  No one double down with 12 points and few players will double down with 8 or fewer points.  However, if the player has 8 points or even fewer and the dealer has a 6, that would be the time to double down with 8 points.  But not in European Blackjack.
  3. The dealer stands on soft 17.  This difference is quite significant.  Analysis of hands has shown that it is to the players’ benefit for the dealer to stand with soft 17.

Match Play 21

There are two main differences in this game and they are significant.

  1. All four 10’s are taken out of the deck.  This makes it a lot easier to hit with 12 or more points.  It also makes it easier for the dealer to get lucky with 16 points.
  2. There are extra payouts for special hands.  These include 3 sevens, a five or six card 21, 6-7-8 of spades, the same holding with mixed suits.

Match Play 21 still requires the gamer to get as close to 21 as possible without going over that value.

21 Blackjack Perfect Pairs

This variation is the same as 21 Blackjack but it is also not the same!  There are actually two games in one in 21 Blackjack Perfect Pairs.  The Perfect Pairs bet is a side bet.  Players are not required to make the side bet.

As the name implies, a pair wins the side bet.  There are three possible winning pairs:

  1. The true Perfect Pair is a pair of exactly the same two cards.  In this blackjack variation, SpinLogic, our exclusive game provider, uses several decks so a true perfect pair is possible and pays 25-1.
  2. A suited pair is a pair of the same color but not the same suit.  This pair pays 21-1.
  3. A non-suited pair pays 6-1.

There is a lot of controversy over whether players should make side bets.  It all depends on how much money you can allow for gaming.  Side bets are fun to play and gamers who have the assets to play them really enjoy them.

Pontoon

This blackjack variation is quite a bit different than the others.  Here’s how:

  1. The dealer hits on soft 17.
  2. Ties go to the dealer. This gives players the incentive to get 19 points if the dealer might get 18 points and so on.
  3. Dealer stands on any five-card hand.
  4. The player can take cards up to five times.  That gives such a player six cards.
  5. If both the dealer and the player have a five-card hand, the dealer wins.
  6. The player has to hit with 14 points or less.
  7. The player can stand with a five-card hand even if it has fewer than 15 points.
  8. A blackjack, called a pontoon, pays 2-1.  This is much better than the standard 3-2.

Suit ‘em Up

This is a standard blackjack game with a side bet.  The side bet is that you will get two suited cards on the deal.  Otherwise, it is the same as 21 Blackjack.

Super 21

In this version of blackjack, the payout for a blackjack is 1-1 which is not so good but a blackjack in diamonds pays out 2-1 which is excellent.  There are also extra payouts for five-card and six-card hands.

21 Face Up

We saved this game for last because it is truly different than all of the other blackjack variations.  In 21 Face Up, gamers see BOTH of the dealer’s cards!  You can imagine how that information works to the gamers’ advantage.  As a result, there are a few rule changes that gamers need to be aware of.

  1. If the dealer has 17 points or higher on her first two cards, she has to stand.  The software gives the players cards until they win or bust.
  2. He dealer hits on soft 17.
  3. Pursuant to #1 above, the dealer wins ties.
  4. 21 Face Up follows the doubling down rules of European Blackjack: players can double down with 9, 10, or 11 points only.
