A lot of players are confused by roulette and craps. The tables are confusing to some and there are a lot of different bets possible in these games. So, some gamers, more than you would think, would like to play roulette and craps but simply don’t understand the games.
So, we here at Everygame Casino Red will go over these great games so that you feel confident playing them.
How to Understand Craps
Craps is a game that basically calls for bettors to bet on the shooter of the dice or against him. When a shooter begins, he or she rolls the dice. This roll is designed to set the “point”. more on that soon. The roll that sets the point is called the “come out roll”. You don’t have to remember all of the terminology at first. It is more important that you understand the game.
The shooter rolls the dice on the come out roll. Before he or she does this, players have to place their bets. If you want to bet on the shooter, you place a bet on the “pass line”. If you want to bet against the shooter, you place a bet on the “don’t pass line”.
There are three possible outcomes of the come out roll. The shooter might roll a 7 or an 11. All players who bet with the shooter win automatically here. The shooter might roll a 2, 3, or 12. In this case all players who bet with the shooter lose.
The final outcome is that one of these numbers: 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10 is rolled. This becomes the point for all bettors.
Now, on the come out roll, if you bet against the shooter, the results of the first two outcomes are reversed. When the shooter wins, you lose.
What Happens When a Point is Set?
The shooter has to continue throwing the dice until he or she rolls the point or a 7. If a 7 happens first, the shooter and everyone who bet with the shooter loses. If the point comes first, all of those players win.
And, of course, the outcome is reversed if you bet against the shooter.
It Sounds Simple. Why is Craps so Confusing?
At this point it is very simple. But there are additional bets gamers can make that do complicate the game.
The first two of the complicating bets are “come” and “don’t come”. Any player can make one of these bets after there is a point. In essence, these bets are like a side game played alongside the main game. The shooter still throws the dice but a player who makes a come or a don’t come bet is playing for a slightly different outcome.
If you make a come bet, you win on a 7 or an 11; you lose on a 2, 3, and 12. If any other number happens that number becomes your point. So, a craps game might have more than one point: the point set by the shooter for himself and the points set by players making a come bet.
A don’t come bet is the opposite of a come bet.
Isn’t This Confusing for the People Running the Game?
It certainly can be. One person cannot run an entire craps table alone. Land-based casinos have three people running the game. Here at Everygame Casino Red, the software provided by SpinLogic handles every contingency.
There are Even More Bets in Craps
At this stage in your craps tutorial, those additional bets truly are confusing so we will list them with a small explanation.
- An odds bet. This is a side bet that either point will be rolled before a 7 is rolled. Depending on the statistical difficulty of rolling the point, the payouts vary.
- Place bet. You can make a place bet that the shooter will make his point before he rolls a 7. This bet also has varying payouts.
- A field bet. This bet is a one-time bet. It has nothing to do with the point. You bet the field. You win even money if a 3, 4, 9, 10, or 11 are rolled. You win 2-1 for a 2 and 3-1 for a 12. You lose if a 5, 6, 7, or 8 is rolled.
- There are a few proposition bets. We won’t go into detail here since as a beginner, you should never make a proposition bet.
- Hardways bet. This means that you bet on doubles such as 4 and 4 instead of the “easy way” of 5-3 or 6-2.
- A hop bet. Here you make a side bet that a specific combination of the dice will happen next.
It’s time to go to roulette. Just remember that craps is primarily a game of chance. Make the simplest bets and have a great time.
Roulette is More Straightforward Than Craps
The key in roulette is to understand the layout of the table. There are a lot of different bets that you make in very specific ways. Unlike in craps, where you can bet on any combination of the dice, there are a lot of bets in roulette that you can’t make.
You can bet on a single number, two numbers, three numbers, four numbers, six numbers, twelve numbers, or eighteen numbers.
Be sure that you understand how the numbers are laid out so that you don’t make conflicting bets.
In addition to these bets, you can bet on red or black and odds or evens. These bets and the bet on the first 18 or last 18 numbers are even money bets. They are the safest bets to make in roulette.
The next thing to understand about roulette is that land-based casinos in the US have only American Roulette. Here at Everygame Casino, we offer European Roulette. The house edge in European Roulette is half the house edge in American Roulette.
The Effect of Alcohol on Roulette Players
A roulette player who has not had any alcohol will conserve their bets and bet mostly on the even money bets. After just enough alcohol to reduce a player’s sense of reality, some players start making other bets. If the bets win, the player is lucky. Most of these bets lose.
Then there is the temptation to make higher bets “just until I get even”.
So, whether you play roulette here at Everygame Casino or at a land-based casino, stay away from alcohol while playing.
