Every game, with the exception of the few Live Games we offer, here at Everygame Casino is run by software. There are, let us say, no blackjack tables, no roulette wheels, no physical dice and craps tables, as there are at land-based casinos. We, and all of the hundreds of thousands of gamers who play at Everygame, rely on software to provide excellent and fair game play in all of our games.
Some of the software is all about the cards in blackjack and video poker. Some of the software is about the wheel and the table in roulette. And a lot of the software we rely on is used to run the more than 200 slots we offer. Software is key here at Everygame Online Casino.
One of the software programs we use is called a random number generator. Since all gamers have to trust the fairness of the random number generator in order to be willing to wager real money on our games, we felt that it would be appropriate to write an entire article on it.
What is a Random Number Generator?
As we said, the RNG is software but that just skims the surface of what and how it does what it does. The random number generator determines the cards in card games and the configuration of symbols and characters in slots.
It is of absolutely paramount importance the RNG be truly random. If it weren’t random, people would sense that the casino could control the outcomes of the games for the casino’s own benefit. The RNG is so random that we, as an online casino and also all land-based casinos that carry games that use a random number generator such as slots and video poker, have no control over the outcome of any game.
There is great significance to that statement.
How is it Significant?
Let’s take blackjack and video poker as examples. These are played with decks of cards. Ther random number generator finds a card randomly. It cannot cause a player to win several hands in a row or lose several hands in a row.
Winning streaks and losing streaks are very common in games like video poker and blackjack. They are also common in roulette where players can choose so-called even money bets. The fact that all spins in roulette are random means that players must, absolutely, avoid using any betting system to win.
Betting systems don’t work and the reason they don’t work is because the RNG has no idea what the result of any previous spin was. That means that every gamer will have winning streaks and losing streaks. It is the losing streaks that cause betting systems to fail and it is all the result of the randomness of the numbers or cards that the RNG generates.
Here is an Example of How Betting Systems Don’t Work
The most famous of all the betting systems is the Martingale System. This system is said to work best on even money bets but it can be applied to any bet. It is best not to try the Martingale System in slots as we will see.
This System Eventually Asks Gamers to Make a Seriously Poor Bet
The idea in this system is to double your bet after you lose a spin or a hand. The problem is that after even three losses in a row you would be asked to make a very large bet in order to win your original bet back.
Gamers Use a Betting System on Certain Kinds of Bets
Let’s say that you are playing the so-called even money bets in roulette. Now, there are no pure even money bets in roulette because of the zero but let’s assume that there are even money bets. Let’s say that you bet $5 and you lose. Then you bet $10 and win. So, after two spins you have lost $5 and won $10.
This is all you can ever win in total in this system: you can win back your original bet.
Here is a short chart to show how this happens:
Bet #1: $5 Bet loses.
Bet #2: $10 Bet loses.
Bet #3: $20 Bet wins.
A Short Losing Streak is as Common as a Short Winning Streak
Now you bet $20 in order to win back your original $5 bet. You have $15 in losses and $20 in wins. Okay, you won your original bet back. But what happens if we extend the losing streak to four spins.
Bet 3: $20 Bet loses.
Bet 4: $40 Bet loses.
Now The Shock Happens
Now you are asked to bet $80 in order to win back your initial $5 bet! Very few people would make such a bet which is why the Martingale System ultimately has to fail. The RNG is so random that you will have some short losing streaks. They are all part of the gaming experience.
Sure, the losing streaks are not fun but the winning streaks are fun. And there are as many winning streaks as losing streaks since the RNG has no memory at all.
No Game is “Due”
The example about the Martingale System as it relates to the random number generator can be extended to any game. No game is due to win a big jackpot because the RNG does not know that it is due. Every spin or hand in any game is a unique experience for the RNG and has no connection at all to any previous hand or spin.
In video poker, the chances of hitting a Royal Flush are 1 in about 40,000 hands. So, if you have been keeping count and have gone 39,999 hands without a Royal Flush, you might think that a Royal Flush is due to hit. The reality of the RNG is that every hand is like the first hand. The RNG does not keep count and, therefore, doesn’t know that a Royal Flush is due.
Avoid All Betting Systems in Slots
We said earlier that slots are the last game to play using a betting system. That’s because even when you have a winning spin, the win might not cover all of the few previous losses. In slots, a win with one character or symbol may be less or more than a win with a different character or symbol.
So even if you want to try a betting system, which we hope you decide not to do, please do not try to use a betting system in slots.
In Slots, the Random Number Generator Can be Calibrated
This means that the game provider can calibrate a slot to return any percentage of money wagered. Here at Everygame Casino, we ask SpinLogic, our great game provider, to calibrate slots to return about 97% of all money wagered. Land-based casinos need to earn more profit from slots so they have their game providers calibrate their slots to return closer to 80% of all money wagered.
