It is not unusual for the best strategy to be to break up a winning pair to go after a much better hand.
Now That You Are Betting the Max, How Do You Proceed?
There are some hands that occur occasionally. You will never break up these hands. They include a Royal Flush, a straight flush, a full house, four of a kind, a straight, and a flush. With the single exception of the four-of-a-kind hand, all are hands that already use all five cards and cannot be improved.
Technically, a full house could be improved to four of a kind but it would be foolish in the extreme to break up a full house to go for a four-of-a-kind hand.
All other hands are hands that you can improve on and you will have to exchange cards in order to do so.
When Should a Gamer Break up a Winning Pair?
Until you get to a two-pair dealt hand, the decisions are or should be obvious. Now, if you have two pairs, you can give up one of the pairs to go for four of as kind. This is a serious mistake. Keep both pairs and go for a full house.
Now, let’s say that you have a winning pair and also four to a straight flush. Now you break up the pair because a straight flush is so much better. With three to a straight flush, you would keep the winning pair but with four, you go for the great hand.
This is especially true if you have a winning pair and four to a Royal Flush. Go for the elusive Royal Flush.
However, if you have four to just a straight or four to a simple flush plus a winning pair, you should keep the pair. It is better to try to improve the pair rather than shooting in the dark for a middling hand.
Never break a winning pair to go for a Royal Flush or a straight flush with just three to the big hand. You will improve the pair fairly often.
