Gambler’s Fallacy in Investments
When a market trends down, it could continue to trend down for many months or years. An investor who holds onto his or her investment because “it has to go back up” may, indeed, see the investment go back up, but it could take a very long time before it does so.
In the meantime, the investor loses the chance to invest the money that is left in other, better investments.
Gambler’s Fallacy in Online Casinos
This involves simply ignoring the implications of the random number generator. This is software that randomly chooses numbers or cards, or dice rolls and so on. The random number generator has no memory. It has no knowledge of what has happened in the recent or not recent past.

There are two fallacious beliefs that many blackjack players have. These are taking insurance and standing with 12 or more points. As a general and truthful rule, taking insurance is a very poor decision. So many blackjack hands have been analyzed by computers that we now know that insurance, in the long run, is a losing bet and decreases a player’s return-to-player rate.
There is one exception to the logical ban on taking insurance: when a player is counting cards and is almost sure that a high card is coming. The dealer might have that high card, giving her blackjack. Then a player can justify taking insurance.
Standing when You Should Hit
The other element that goes under the rubric of Gambler’s Fallacy is to always stand with 12 points or more. The same statistical analysis of millions of hands that demonstrated that taking insurance is a poor choice also shows that there are many hands on which a player should hit with even 16 points!
A player who falls into this trap is convinced that they will always get a ten-point card and bust. That will happen plenty if times, of course. But, overall, the player will win more hands by hitting in the face of a dealer’s 7 through ace.
Gambler’s Fallacy in Video Poker
The classic mistake a video poker player might make is to either not bet the maximum or to bet the maximum and then forget to go for a Royal Flush when the opportunity arises.
A Royal Flush comes about once in 40,000 hands or so. If you play video poker regularly, you will get a Royal Flush or two over time. A Royal Flush has a big extra payment, so it often behooves a player to go for the Royal.
The biggest Gambler’s Fallacy in video poker involves holding onto a winning pair even though breaking up the pair might lead to getting a much better hand with a much higher payout.
In many cases, the player has a good chance to win the hand anyway, even though he or she broke apart a winning pair.
