How Can Gamers Improve at Casino Gaming?

This seems like a simple enough question.  Here at Everygame Online Casino, we talk a lot about ways gamers can get better at gaming.  So, we will not rehash old discussions.  Instead, we will look at other ways to improve at casino gaming.

Can Players of Games of Chance Improve at Gaming?

Become a Specialist

There are some people who say that our society has become one of many specialists and no Jacks of all trades.  To some extent, there is something to be said for being pretty good at many things instead of excellent at just one thing.

In casino gaming, we are talking about being very good at some games.  That doesn’t mean that you can’t or shouldn’t play other games; in fact we encourage playing our full complement of over 300 games.

It simply means that, when you are playing for real money, you should play the games we are the best at more often than you play other games.

Games of Skill and Games of Chance

The games of skill are blackjack, video poker, Caribbean Poker, and baccarat.  All of the other games are games of chance.  However, even in the games of chance, there are techniques that can help you become better at these games.

If it’s a Game of Chance….?

The first technique for getting better at the games of chance is to realize that they are entirely games of chance.  This requires accepting that there I no gambling method that can game the game (to coin a phrase).  The Random Number Generator decides every outcome of every game and that means that in the games of chance, there is no gaming strategy that will make you better.

Recognizing this will actually make you a better gamer!  So, as contradictory as it may seem, by recognizing that in the games of chance, there is no way to get better from a strategic point of view will make you a better gamer!

How is that Possible?

There are many decisions a gamer has to make that are not exactly strategic decisions but are important nonetheless in one’s overall success at gaming.  One such decision is the length of time you will play.  If a 30-minute session is fundamentally the best length of time for a gaming session, given your other interests and responsibilities, then you should play for no more than 30 minutes.

If you find yourself extending the gaming session, first by just a few minutes, and then by doubling the amount of time or going beyond that, you can and should recognize that gaming has become a kind of unhealthy obsession and perhaps you should stop casino gaming altogether!

Here at Everygame Casino, we are committed to responsible gaming and playing longer than one should is a major warning sign to either cut back dramatically or stop gaming altogether.

Avoid all Betting Systems

Understaffing that the Random Number Generator has no “mind” of its own, doesn’t have any knowledge of previous hands or spins, and cannot be figured out in any precise way, will lead a responsible gamer to avoid betting systems.

There are many betting systems.  Some call for raising the bet after every loss and some call for lowering the bet after every win.  None of these systems can work in the long run.

Can they Work in the Short Run?

Now, they could work in the very short run and just like the above example where a gamer may extend his or her gaming session by a mere few minutes until the gaming gets out of hand, a few wins with a betting system may lead a gamer to lose a very large sum of money.

We will use the Martingale system as an example.  In this system, you double your bet after every loss.  Now, this system, as most of them are, is designed for even-money bets.  It is most certainly not designed for bets on a single number in roulette.  It is not designed for blackjack where each hand is far from an even-money proposition.

So, let’s say that you are playing roulette and you bet on red on every spin of the wheel.  If your starting bet was $5 and you lost, your next bet would be for $10.  Now, if you win the second spin, you win the $10, and by subtracting the $5 you lost on the first spin, you win in the end a total of $5 or the exact equivalent of your original bet.

It Sounds Good.  What’s the Problem?

What happens if you lose five spins in a row?  This happens much more often than we would think since the Random Number Generator treats each spin as a unique event in itself unrelated to any spins previous to it.

Here are your bets for five losses in a row:

  1. $5
  2. $10
  3. $20
  4. $40
  5. $80

You have made and lost $155 in bets and to continue with the system, you have to bet $160 on the next bet.  If you win, you win the same $5 that you won in the example we gave above where you won on the second spin.

So, you would be wagering $160 to win $5.  This is not sound casino gaming!  And that is the big flaw in all betting systems.

How to Become a Specialist

We spoke about becoming a specialist at the beginning of the article.  Here we mean that in order to have the best statistical return to player rate, you have to study the strategy in the games of skill.

Card counting is effective only in single deck blackjack games and they are rare indeed these days.  Still, there are many strategy decisions a player can make that will go a long way to putting the session in the black.

In video poker, it is easy to misunderstand the value of the five cards you have been dealt.  Only by studying and becoming a specialist in the strategy of video poker can a gamer reach the 99.5% return to player rate that we speak about in video poker.

At that rarified level, a winning session is quite common!

Caribbean Poker presents a unique strategic challenge since you can win your ante bet if the dealer doesn’t qualify.  This proviso in the rules of Caribbean Poker makes strategy much more subtle!

We would like to reiterate that becoming a specialist means being an expert in the strategy of the games of skill and being aware of other factors such as time and money budgets for the games of chance.
