His treasure, worth around $4.2 million, was hidden on Gardiner’s Island. Kidd planned to use it as a last resort to escape conviction. The plan backfired spectacularly, as the British government eventually found the treasure - and used it as evidence during the trial. A few legends remain about other buried treasures, but none have been proven true.
