But while Easter eggs have been a tradition for almost 2,000 years, egg hunts are slightly more recent. Most historians believe that egg hunts date back to the 16th century in Germany. Martin Luther would usually organize an egg hunt for his congregation. Men hid the eggs, while women and children had to find them. The eggs were usually hidden behind thorny plants and other tricky obstacles.
Rabbits and hares were also a popular symbol of life and fertility during antiquity, but only became associated with Easter during the Middle Ages. Much like the egg hunt, the Easter Bunny also originates from the Lutherans in Germany - but as the Easter Hare. One could even say that the Hare was Easter’s equivalent of Santa Claus, as it would go around handing sweets, toys and other treats to well–behaved children.
Chocolate is a much more recent tradition, dating back to the court of Louis XIV in 17th century France. Back then, the costume was to simply fill out empty eggshells with chocolate. But the one credited with popularizing chocolate eggs was Mrs Giambone, an Italian widow who owned a small shop in Turin. Mrs Giambone’s chocolate-filled eggs became a success among her fellow Turinese, and the tradition later spread to other European countries.
Modern chocolate eggs were created in Britain in 1875. Famous chocolate manufacturer J. S. Fry & Sons managed to create the first egg-shaped chocolate, which then went on to replace the chocolate-filled egg shells.
