Hidden Treasures
When it comes to missing treasures, it’s difficult to topple the Holy Grail from the top of the list. The cup from which Jesus drank at the Last Supper has been the subject of much speculation for over 2,000 years. Treasure hunts in search of the Holy Grail have been going on for more than a few centuries. In fact, the search for the Grail is one of the Arthurian legend’s central themes, proving that treasure hunts aren’t exactly a new trend.
Aside from the Arthurian legend, the Grail was also the main plot in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Contrary to the legend, which describes the Grail as a golden chalice encrusted in jewels, the 1989 film instead goes for a slightly more realistic representation, making the Grail a modest cup instead. Whether it exists or not is still up for debate - but that hasn’t stopped treasure hunters from going after the legendary chalice.
The Ark of the Covenant is another famous legendary treasure that was featured in an Indiana Jones movie - Raiders of the Lost Ark, the first film of the trilogy. According to the legend, the Ark was a wooden chest covered in gold and contained two stone tablets with the Ten Commandments. The Ark disappeared sometime during or after the siege of Jerusalem in 587 BC. Whether it was destroyed or hidden remains a mystery, and many treasure hunters continue to search for the lost ark.
Another famous ancient treasure is the Copper Scroll, which is also known by the identifier 3Q15. Arguably the most famous of the Dead Sea Scrolls, the Copper Scroll is a two-section, 8 ft metal sheet listing 64 locations with vast quantities of treasure. But the scroll doesn’t offer any directions on how to reach these places. Instead, it simply offers a general description of each location, without providing any additional detail.
Scholars have also struggled to translate the scrolls, as it contains several orthographic mistakes. As a result, it’s hard to tell whether these treasures have already been found, or if they are still hidden somewhere. Nothing to deter treasure hunters from looking for the mysterious loot.
