Mother’s Day History and Facts
Did you know that Mother’s Day has been celebrated for over a century? While many cultures and countries have celebrated maternity in some way for longer than that (e.g. in the UK "Mothering Sunday" was celebrated as early as the 1600s), the modern Mother’s Day was established in 1908.
Anna Maria Jarvis, the daughter of Civil War-era activist Ann Maria Jarvis, wanted to make her late mother’s wish come true: establishing a day to “celebrate the matchless service mothers render to society every day of their life”. And so, on May 10, 1908, Anna Jarvis held a memorial at Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church to honor the third anniversary of her mother’s death. That became known as the first ever Mother’s Day celebration.
Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church is now considered the International Mother's Day Shrine. The date, meanwhile, was proclaimed a national holiday by President Woodrow Wilson in 1914. It was the validation of a nine-year effort from Jarvis, who had been trying to get the day officially recognized since her mother’s death.
But Mother’s Day didn’t take on as Jarvis had envisioned. Her initial idea consisted of having people wear a white or pink carnation, visiting one’s mother and attending church services. By the 1920s, however, she denounced how Mother’s Day had already become “too commercial”. She even went as far as urging people to stop buying flowers and cards during the day.
According to a survey by the National Retail Federation (NRF), Mother’s Day spendings reached $31.7 billion in 2022 - up from $15.7 billion in 2007. Around 84% of US adults intended to celebrate the occasion. It’s a big day for flower shops, as Mother’s Day is the third most lucrative celebration of the year, behind Valentine’s and Christmas. Card sales also skyrocket during Mother’s Day with 113 million cards on average, making it the second most popular day of the year, behind Xmas.
