Oktoberfest Facts: Fairgrounds, Beers, Tents and More
Oktoberfest has been held on the same fairground since its first edition, in 1810. The Theresienwiese, which roughly translates as “Therese’s Meadow”, is a 4.5-million sq ft open space in Munich. Named after Queen Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen, Theresienwiese hosted the wedding festivities of Therese and the then-Crown Prince Ludwig I. The event was a major success - to the point that it had to be hosted again the following year. And so the tradition began, and Oktoberfest was born.
Theresienwiese is home to a total of 38 Oktoberfest tents, 17 of which are considered big tents. The other 21 are considered small tents. Out of the big ones, there are a few that really stand out.
Hofbräu-Festzelt is the largest Oktoberfest tent, with a total capacity of around 10,000. Augustiner-Festhalle is the most traditional tent, with huge wooden barrels (hirsche) and its own butcher’s shop, as well as the oldest Oktoberfest band.
Armbrustschützenzelt (the Crossbow Tent) hosts the annual German Crossbow Championship as the main attraction. Fischer-Vroni, meanwhile, is known for its famous fish on a stick.
Of course, we can’t talk about the Oktoberfest without mentioning beer, right? As tradition mandates, only beer from Munich breweries can be served on Oktoberfest. There are six major breweries in total. Augustiner is the oldest of them, dating back to 1328. The other five are Hacker-Pschorr, Hofbräu, Löwenbräu, Paulaner, and Spaten. On average, over 233.3-million oz are consumed annually during Oktoberfest. The record was set in 2015, with over 260-million oz.
But there is more to Oktoberfest than food, beer, traditional music and folk dance. Other attractions include Hau den Lukas, a classic strongman game, and Feldl's Teufelsrad, which literally translates as “Devil’s Wheel”.
