High Fantasy, Low Fantasy - the Fantasy Genre Explained
Fantasy works are usually split into a wide range of subgenres: sci-fi, epic, sword and sorcery, and dark fantasy - and that’s only to name a few. But all fantasy works fall within two bigger, catch-all categories: high and low fantasy.
High fantasy works take place in a different world. This world has its own set of rules, and its own mythical creatures, while the magic and otherwise unusual events are a common occurrence. When we talk about high fantasy works, Lord of the Rings is the most obvious example. Hobbits, dwarves, elves, the feared Nazgul, the Balrog trolls, orcs and other mythical creatures are all an integral part of that universe. Magic is also a common thing in Tolkien’s universe.
In high fantasy works, the plot is often considered simple and relatively straightforward: the hero and their party must defeat the villain. The plot doesn’t demand as much attention as the fictional world in which the story takes place.
Low fantasy works, on the other hand, are set in our own world, but with fantastic elements added in. Dark fantasies, superhero stories, historical fantasies and most sci-fi works fall under the low fantasy genre.
Since the world in low fantasy works is very similar to ours, the plot is usually far more complex compared to high fantasy stories. Although there are exceptions, the protagonists are often morally ambiguous.
