Is Friday the 13th Really an Unlucky Day?

Most cultures associate the number 12 with perfection: 12 days of Christmas, 12 months, 12 zodiac signs, 12 gods of Olympus, 12-hour cycles. The number 13, on the other hand, has long been associated with bad luck. But why, exactly?

While there are many explanations for this belief, the oldest one likely comes from Norse mythology. It’s related to the infamous god Loki. The other 12 gods in Valhalla decided to throw a party, and Loki was the only one left out.

Baldr, the invincible, was among the 12 gods. He had previously made every object on Earth vow to never kill him. There was, however, one minor oversight: deemed insignificant, the mistletoe was never asked to make this vow. And so Loki, learning about Baldr’s only weakness, came up with a plan for revenge. After making a mistletoe arrow, he arrived as the 13th uninvited guest at the party and gave the weapon to Höðr, Baldr’s blind brother.

The gods were playing around and throwing objects at Baldr, who would effortlessly bounce them off. Unaware of his brother’s deadly weakness, Höðr shot the mistletoe arrow and killed Baldr, throwing Vahalla and Earth into darkness. Since this unfortunate incident had been caused by Loki, the 13th guest, the number 13 consequently became associated with bad luck.

There is also another rather infamous 13th guest: Judas Iscariot, the disciple who betrayed Jesus, was the 13th guest to arrive for the Last Supper. Christianity considers Friday unlucky since it was the day that Jesus was crucified.

Another event associated with Friday the 13th is the downfall of the Templars. On October 13, 1307, which happened to fall on a Friday, King Philip IV of France ordered the arrest and ultimately the execution of hundreds of Templars. The order was disbanded five years later. While some believe that this is the story behind the Friday the 13th superstitions, that has already been proven wrong.

Did you know that the fear of the number 13 and the fear of Friday the 13th have their own words? Triskaidekaphobia, which comes from the Greek word for thirteen (treiskaídeka), is used to designate the fear of the number itself. Paraskevidekatriaphobia, the fear of Friday the 13thcombines the Greek words for Friday (paraskevi), ten (deka) and three (tria).
Friggatriskaidekaphobia is another word used for the fear of Friday the 13th. Friday means “the day of Frigga”, the Norse goddess of fertility - also Baldr’s and Höðr’s mother. Everything comes in circles in the end.

It’s not as bad as it seems. Some ancient cultures, however, considered 13 to be a lucky number. It was often associated with the moon cycles, which were also related to fertility. And for Italians, the number 13 isn’t that unlucky. Friday the 17th is considered the unluckiest day instead.
