Peace and love! Last time around, we took a look at the history behind the hippie era. Now, we will move on to the second part of our trippy Hippie Heaven promotion at Everygame Casino.
As the counterculture movement grew and spread across the US, it quickly drew attention from the mainstream. And in 1967, it made waves in San Francisco: around 100,000 people gathered in the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood. The series of events was then named the Summer of Love, which then became a significant part of the hippie movement’s history. Everygame will tell you a bit more about this magic time - adding a special bonus at the end!
If You Are Going to San Francisco…
Let’s pick up where the first post left off. The hippie movement was already quite big in the US, and it quickly spread from coast to coast. And while hippies were already making waves in New York, the movement turned to the West Coast - and more specifically San Francisco. Already a popular destination for beatniks in the 50s, the Golden City drew in a crowd of young teens and adults in the summer of 1967.
A few months earlier, in January, San Francisco had already hosted the Human Be-In, an event held to celebrate counterculture. It turned out to be a huge success, with 30,000 people gathering in Golden Gate Park. The sizable crowd encouraged more people to join the hippie movement and adopt its values.
During the spring break, thousands of high-school and college students gathered in the Haight-Ashbury district, already offering a glimpse at what was about to come. Around that time, Haight-Ashbury residents created the Council of the Summer of Love, which then originated the event’s name.
In June, the Monterey Pop Festival drew in another massive crowd of 60,000 people. San Francisco, Scott McKenzie’s famous song, was released to promote the event and quickly became the unofficial anthem of the movement.
Over the course of the Summer of Love, over 100,000 people made their way to the San Francisco area. Dr. David E. Smith founded the Haight-Ashbury Free Clinic, offering substance abuse treatment, mental health assistance and other medical services for the young hippies.
Of course, it wasn’t all flowers. The sudden influx of people soon led to a number of problems in Haight-Ashbury, most notably a rise in substance abuse, crime and homelessness. But all in all, the Summer of Love left a positive mark on the history of the hippie movement.
