In the third and final blog post of this promo, we will revisit the world’s most famous music festival. That’s right, the one and only Woodstock. Three Days of Peace & Music
Woodstock was born from the idea of four young entrepreneurs: John Roberts, Joel Rosenman, Artie Kornfield and Michael Lang. The latter two, inspired by Lang’s previous successful experience organizing the Miami Pop Festival, wanted to build a new studio in Woodstock. Roberts and Rosenman would be the ones financing it. However, the two businessmen proposed financing a new festival instead, with Kornfield and Lang agreeing to change their original plans.
At first, the group had trouble drawing in artists, until Creedence Clearwater Revival signed with them. It then opened the floodgates, with other famous groups and solo artists soon joining the frame.
Initially planned as a much smaller event for around 50,000 people, the Woodstock festival sold over 185,000 tickets in advance. And then the problems began. The first one was the venue: as the number of festival-goers became much bigger than originally anticipated, the organizers had to switch everything on the fly.
After the city of Woodstock rejected hosting the festival, the venue moved to Mills Industrial Park in Wallkill. But the ever-growing number of tickets eventually led to a ban, as city officials were assured that the festival wasn’t going to exceed 50,000 attendees. Ultimately, the organizers moved the event to a 600-acre farm in Bethel.
The problems were far from over, though. Unable to build fences and ticket booths in time for the event, and with 50,000 people have already arrived at the farm to wait for the shows, everything about it spelt disaster. In the end, there was no alternative other than turning Woodstock into a free concert.
Forget about the projected numbers: the free event drew in around 500,000 people. And so began the unforgettable days of music, peace, love drugs and just about everything in between. A total of 32 acts were performed over the course of the three-day event. Despite all the trouble, Woodstock went down in history as arguably the greatest music festival ever held, and became a symbol of the hippie movement.
The organizers also managed to make a lot of money. Although these early troubles left them close to bankruptcy, the money from the filming and recording rights was more than enough to cover it.
