Tales From a Distant Land

Fantasy stories draw their inspiration from older myths, legends and fairy tales. While many older epics had fantastical elements, these stories still have some significant differences compared to modern fantasies. The defining element for fantasy stories as we know them is worldbuilding. Modern fantasies are usually set in another world, with its own set of rules.

Modern fantasy is a relatively new genre, with its origins dating back to the mid-19th century. Two British authors are widely regarded as the pioneers of modern fantasy.

The first one is George MacDonald. Phantastes, an 1858 novel, is considered the first fantasy story written for adults. The main character, Anodos, is transported to the land of fairies on his 21st birthday and goes on to live a fantastic adventure.

The second author is William Morris. His 1896 book The Well at the World’s End is considered a mark in the fantasy genre: it was the first story set in a completely different world with medieval elements. It was also the first work in the popular high fantasy subgenre.

In the early 20th century, fantasy stories drew in a larger audience. In the late 50s and early 60s, J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings and C.S. Lewis’ The Chronicles of Narnia, finally allowed the fantasy genre to reach the mainstream. These two masterpieces drove a larger demand for epic fantasies, quickly turning this genre into the juggernaut it is nowadays.

Fantasy isn’t limited to literature either. The genre has expanded into many other media, including cartoons, TV series, comic books, films, video games and tabletop games.

How about learning more about the fascinating Chinese mythology? Our game suggestion is Ancient Gods.

The Four Auspicious Beasts, or Four Symbols, are connected to the four cardinal directions. Qinglong, the Azure Dragon, is the guardian of the East, having wood as its element. Zhuque, the Vermilion Bird, is the guardian of the South, with fire as its element. Baihu, the White Tiger, is the guardian of the West and has metal as its element. Xuanwu, the Black Tortoise, is the guardian of the North, with water as its element.

All Four Auspicious Beasts are also part of the Wuxing, a five-phase system which is the basis of Chinese philosophy. The fifth element, earth, is represented by Qilin, the Yellow Dragon, guardian of the central direction.

In Ancient Gods, these five divine beasts will help you achieve great fortune. This slot has a prize multiplier feature during free spins, while the Yellow Dragon wild can also expand to cover additional spots. During free games, it will also add extra spins when two or more show up.
