Dinosaurs first appeared some 240 million years ago. Following the Triassic-Jurassic extinction, which happened around 40 million years later, dinosaurs became the dominant species on Earth.
While most people will immediately associate dinosaurs with carnivores, that’s actually a misconception. The vast majority of dinosaur species, around 65%, were actually herbivores. But the most recognizable dinosaur, the T-Rex, was an apex predator, standing unrivalled at the top of the food chain.
The tallest dinosaur was the Sauroposeidon, which could reach 60 ft in height with its neck extended and with a length of 112 ft. For comparison, the T-Rex had an average length of 40 ft from head to tail.
The largest flying dinosaur was the Quetzalcoatlus, a pterosaur with an average wingspan of 33 ft. Just to give you an idea, the albatross, which has the largest wingspan among living birds, can reach 11.6 ft.
Dinosaurs are split into two different groups: avian and non-avian. It’s a common belief that dinosaurs disappeared around 66-million years ago during a mass extinction event. It all happened as a direct consequence of an asteroid impact, which led to a long winter and caused a major ecological collapse.
With the food chain completely disrupted, the bigger dinosaurs slowly became extinct. Smaller species, on the other hand, were able to thrive as a result of increasingly available food sources.
