Cinco de Mayo History and Facts
Contrary to what most people believe, Cinco de Mayo isn’t the Mexican Independence Day, which is actually celebrated on September 16. Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican win over the French troops in the 1862 Battle of Puebla. On that day, the Mexicans were severely outnumbered by the better-equipped invading French. Against all the odds, the troops stationed in Puebla held off the French offensive and even managed to repeal the push.
But while Cinco de Mayo is a big date in the US, that’s not really the case in Mexico. In fact, Cinco de Mayo isn’t even considered an official holiday outside of Puebla. How did a small celebration in its native country become such an important event in the US? The answer goes back to a 1989 marketing campaign by a famous beer company.
While Mexican-Americans had been celebrating Cinco de Mayo since 1863, it wasn’t anywhere near as massive as it is now. Following the heavy marketing push, however, the Mexican-American community embraced the date as a celebration of its culture. With that, Cinco de Mayo went mainstream, and the celebrations also became popular outside the Mexican-American community.
How popular are we talking about? Here is a very interesting fact: Cinco de Mayo beats St. Patrick’s Day beer sales, and has matched or even surpassed Super Bowl beer sales on some occasions. In 2013, a Nielsen study showed that Cinco de Mayo beer sales were around $600 million. That number went up to $735 million in 2016 and $967 million in 2020.
Of course, it’s not just beer. Cinco de Mayo is also a big date for tequila sales and Mexican restaurants. While tequila sales usually double during Cinco de Mayo celebrations, Mexican eateries usually see their numbers grow by around 50%.
