The History Behind Oceans Day and Interesting Facts

For a long time, activists maintained that world leaders should take a stronger stance on ocean preservation. The first steps towards raising awareness about this problem were taken during the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development.

A joint initiative by Canada's International Centre for Ocean Development and the Ocean Institute of Canada led to the first World Oceans Day, celebrated on June 8 that same year. But despite the growing celebrations and calls for action, it took another 16 years for the UN to officially recognize the date. In December 2008, the General Assembly passed the declaration to designate June 8 as World Oceans Day.

It’s surprisingly easy to underestimate the importance of oceans. They cover an impressive 70% of the Earth’s surface. And at 60 million square miles, the Pacific Ocean alone covers over 30% of our planet’s surface!

Scientists have already identified over 235,000 marine species, which is already a very significant number. But even more impressive is the fact that over 90% of all marine species remain unidentified. While it might seem like an exaggeration at first, this percentage makes sense: we have explored less than 4% of the ocean floor. And according to the Smithsonian, the deep sea accounts for 95% of Earth’s living space!

Speaking of space - and outer space - the ocean also houses the world’s biggest living structure. The Great Barrier Reef in Australia is a 133 million square miles structure consisting of almost 3,000 individual reefs. Scientists estimate that the Great Barrier Reef has unfortunately lost over half of its cover since 1985. But it still remains big enough to be seen from outer space.

Last - but definitely not least: the oceans are also the lungs of our planet. While most people believe that this title belongs to forests, this is a common misconception. Algae and other microscopic lifeforms produce between 50 to 80% of Earth’s oxygen! Not only that, but oceans are also responsible for regulating our planet’s temperature. These same lifeforms absorb large quantities of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, playing a big role in avoiding an even bigger climate disaster.
