The Oktoberfest is celebrating 209 years in 2019. It has grown significantly since the first edition, held in 1810. The festivities last for 16 days, ending on the first Sunday of October. If the first Sunday happens to fall before October 3rd, the festival is extended. In 2018, the Oktoberfest occupied an area of 0.3 square miles. That's approximately equal to seven times the area of Houston Texans' NRG Stadium, the largest in the NFL. Last year's edition had 7.2 million visitors, averaging 450,000 a day.
When it comes to Oktoberfest, the tents are the most iconic attractions. The 2018 edition featured a total of 34 - 14 small, 20 large - tents. Schottenhamel-Festhalle, with a capacity for 9,000 guests, is where the festivities begin. The mayor of Munich taps the first keg, proclaiming "O’zapft is!" ("It's tapped!"). "Schott'n" is also the festival's oldest tent. Hofbräu-Festzelt, meanwhile, is the largest one, with capacity for 9,991 visitors.
Now let's move on to the Oktoberfest's attractions. The most famous one is the Willenborg Ferris Wheel, one of the festival's symbols. Inaugurated in 1979, it has 40 gondolas with capacity for 10 people each, making it a total of 400 in one ride. Next is the Toboggan, a two-in-one attraction. First, visitors get to a platform using a transportation belt. Then comes the second part, sliding down the eight meter wood toboggan itself.
Did you know that the Oktoberfest has both the tallest mobile drop tower and the largest transportable roller coaster in the world? They are, respectively, the SkyFall, at 262 ft., and the Olympia Looping, a 4.100 ft. long roller coaster. As the name suggests, these two aren't exclusive to the Oktoberfest, but still worth checking out.
