And there is a special bonus waiting for you at the end of this post!

Did You Know That…

Who doesn’t like a little animal trivia? The wildlife is full of mysteries and crazy facts. Let’s learn about some of them.

Fact #1: Let’s start off with one that is always a success: the panda. These lovely bears are probably among the weirdest species on the planet. Don’t believe us? Then how about this: pandas are actually carnivores. Everything, from its skull shape to its digestive system and genes are those of a dangerous carnivore.

But pandas rarely eat any meat. Their diet consists of 99% of vegetables. Why? No one really knows the answer. Since the panda’s carnivore digestive system requires lots of nutrients, it needs to eat a lot to make up for the lack of meat in the diet. Pandas spend up to 16 hours a day feeding.

Fact #2: Do you know why animals curl into balls when it’s cold? Doing so reduces the surface area. Since heat flows from a warmer body to a cooler one, a smaller surface area means that less heat will leave the animal’s body in the cold air or the cold floor.

That means the opposite is true: wider surface areas can be used to dissipate heat. Elephants have a very efficient cooling mechanism: their ears. They are heavily vascularized, and their large surface area helps dissipate the heat from the blood vessels, lowering the animal’s internal temperature.

Fact #3: It is well-known that the orca (or killer whale) is, in fact, a dolphin. But did you know that dolphins are actually whales? Both dolphins and whales are classified as cetaceans, which are split into two further orders: toothed whales and baleen whales. Dolphins belong to the first one. Orcas are, indeed, whales.

Speaking of dolphins, they are considered extremely intelligent. In fact, they do share some habits with humans. The craziest one? Dolphins make use of recreational drugs. Their favorite is the pufferfish’s toxin. Although this substance can be deadly, it has a hallucinogenic effect in smaller doses.

Fact #4: Seahorses and seadragons are the only species in which the male undergoes pregnancy. Female seahorses, which are significantly bigger than their male counterparts, deposit thousands of eggs inside the male’s pouch.

Speaking of unusual reproductive behavior, the football fish takes the cake. While the female can grow up to 2 feet, the male is barely 1 inch long. Shortly after it is born, the male loses its digestive system and must immediately attach itself to a female. Once it does, its body essentially fuses with the female football fish, leaving only the reproductive organ intact. Yes, nature can be quite scary.

Fact #5: Humanity’s search for immortality goes back thousands and thousands of years. But one small jellyfish has already managed to achieve it: the Turritopsis dohrnii, or immortal jellyfish.

The standard jellyfish life cycle goes from a stalked infant phase (polyp) to a free-swimming adult phase (medusa). Unlike other jellyfish species, immortal jellyfish can freely go back and forth between the two phases. Whenever an immortal jellyfish is gravely wounded, sick or simply too old, it will reprogram the genetic code, transform its cells and revert back to the polyp stage. After some time, the polyp will mature and go back to the adult phase. And so its cycle of “death” and “rebirth” continues, making it effectively immortal.
